The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) will hold a free sapling distribution of native tree species in association with the National Society of the Friends of Trees and the Rotary club of Bombay Seacoast on Sunday, August 11, in Santa Cruz.  Celebrating the forest festival Vanmahotsav, the sapling distribution is in memory of soldiers from Maharashtra who lost their lives in wars before and after Independence.

Over the years there has been an increase in the number and types of exotic trees in urban areas as compared to indigenous species. Gulmohur, Copper pod and Rain tree are commonly seen around us. “There are a few species that adapt to a certain environment and they become a part of the ecosystem. Native trees fulfil various requirements of local birds and insects that depend on them for food and shelter, lack of which forces them to relocate,” says Atul Sathe from BNHS.

The saplings, which have been scientifically raised at Godrej tree bank, will include native species such as Sita Ashok, Indian Laburnum, Deshi Badam, Jambhul and Kailashpati.

For people who want to help but don’t have the time there is the option of adopting a native tree. BNHS will take care of the tree and give regular updates for five years. The adoption process will begin next month.
There are almost 125 varieties of trees to choose from..

Eco-minded?
BNHS also has a seminar and a brain storming session on Green Careers for individuals who want to opt for environment related careers at Sathaye College, Vile Parle on the 12th of August between 2pm to 4:30pm.

Date: Sunday, 11th August   Time: 9am to 11am
Venue: Gokul Sushma, near Lions Garden, Linking Road Extension, Santa Cruz (W)
