The LT Marg police have arrested a 40-year-old travel agent who allegedly duped several families of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of providing them a package tour of nine nights and ten days to Dubai.
Sameer Tamboli, a resident of Daund in Pune, was arrested and he has been booked under various sections of cheating, forgery and breach of trust of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He is under police custody till January 5.
According to the police, complainant Rinku Dharnesha was looking for a tour operator who could arrange a group trip to Dubai on concessional rates. "Dharnesha was referred to Tamboli. Tamboli came to Dharnesha's residence and explained to him about the scheme. Tamboli promised a trip to Dubai for Dharnesha with his wife and their son for Rs1.42 lakh inclusive of air tickets, visas, food and accommodation. Finding the deal suitable, the family deposited the amount in Tamboli's bank account," said an officer from LT Marg police station.
Dharnesha also introduced some of his relatives and their friends to Tamboli. "In all, Tamboli took Rs6.75 lakh from 13 people. They were supposed to fly to Dubai in May but Tamboli told them that the tour has been postponed till June. However, Tamboli gave some of them tickets of Oman airlines," the officer said.
Later, Tamboli started avoiding phone calls of all these people. When some of them visited his office in Pune, they learnt from neighbours that the office has been shut since the past 18 months. They were also told by the neighbours that Tamboli had duped several persons similarly in the past. "Inquiries with the Oman airlines revealed that Tamboli had paid only the initial amount of Rs50,000 for booking but as he failed to pay the balance amount, the airlines cancelled the tickets. Tamboli was arrested from Lonavala on Saturday," the officer said.
