For a 12-year-boy living in the slums of Wadala, stealing spare parts and construction materials meant earning bread for the day.
On Thursday, the boy, along with his three friends, again dared to steal scrap materials and spare parts, worth a few thousand, from inside a truck — Balaji Cargo Movers — near Anik Depot in Wadala. However, this time, he had to pay a heavy price for it.
He was brutally beaten up by an employee of the truck company, possibly the driver or the cleaner. dna photographer Hemant Padalkar caught him in the act.
While the boy’s friends managed to escape, he was dragged by three men and, later, one of them stripped him bare, tied his hands with a rope and started beating him, which he did for about 10 minutes with a wooden stick. The boy’s cries went unheard. On seeing cameras flashing at them, the man stopped beating, dressed him up and took him to police station.
At the Wadala TT police station, where a case of theft has been registered against the boy, the police are unaware of what happened.
Sub inspector SS Kumbar said, “He was brought by the company’s supervisor, Santosh Mandavkar. These boys are a nuisance and keep stealing scraps and spare parts. We are not aware of the torture he went through.”
Kumbar said the boy will be sent to a juvenile home. “If anybody wants to register a complaint against the truck company, s/he can.
When he was brought in, there was no mention of any torture. The most we can do is send him for a medical check-up for injuries and register a non-cognisable complaint.”
