The ambitious Nhava-Sewri-Worli link bridge that is aimed at easing the perennial commuting problems of the city is being reworked to increase its efficiency. The plan of the much delayed but crucial, elevated 4.25-km long Sewri-Worli Connector and has now been extended by about 300 metres to the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) instead of terminating it close to regional Passport Office at Prabhadevi. This connector will bridge the proposed Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) with the Worli Sea link.

What is the change in plan?
"We are trying to connect the elevated connector right upto the BWSL and not as was planned earlier," said UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA. As per the revision, the Worli-end arm will land just close to regional headquarters of Indian Coast Guard or INS Trata. The reworked plan of Worli-Sewri Connector will extend the arm at Worli end right close to the point where Bandra Worli Sea Link starts. The revised proposal will be sent to Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority. The detailed design of the project is being prepared by MMRDA

How will the Nhava-Sewri-Worli link benefit commuters?
Around 60,000 vehicles are expected to use the trans harbour link daily. Out of this around 10,000 to 15,000 vehicles will use the Sewri-Worli connector. The Rs11,000 crore mega project will connect Nhava in Navi Mumbai with Sewri. From Sewri a connector will reach up to Worli via Prabhadevi. The projects will get delayed from the earlier completion date of 2017.

Will migratory birds in Sewri get affected?
The project is trying to minimise the damage to the environment especially the migratory birds which come during winter in the Sewri mudflats on both the sides of Thane creek. These areas have been designated as International Bird Areas. From, the earlier Rs300 crore, now Rs800 crore has been earmarked for adjustment to the plan. The earlier design was an embankment in Sewri but it has been changed to a bridge of an additional 2 kms. During the construction phase noise barriers will be used and this would be there permanently even after the 22-km long bridge is ready. The equipment or machinery used will have noise mufflers, that reduce the sound emanating from the heavy machinery so as not to scare away the migratory birds. The consultants have also suggested constant monitoring of sound levels by installing sound meters.

How will the Connector and link help commuters?
Commuters from Navi Mumbai to Central and South Mumbai will have huge benefits in terms of time saved and a mostly trouble-free ride. Also travel from the city to Navi Mumbai will get a lot more easier. Long distance travellers from the western suburbs going towards Goa and south India are likely to use the BWSL-Sewri-Worli Link-MTHL instead of using the clogged Vashi Creek bridge. The elevated bridge will snake through the congested areas of central Mumbai like Sewri, Parel, Elphinstone Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Worli Sea Face.
