A sub-inspector of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was mowed down by the superfast express train on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday at Virar. The incident happened when the officer tried to cross the track while going from one platform to another.

According to Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP), Jitendra Bagadia, 43, was patrolling on platform number 3. He jumped on to the track since he wanted to go to platform number 4. As he started walking on the track, the 12959 Dadar-Bhuj superfast express mowed him down.

While some of Bagadia's colleagues at Vasai RPF blamed work fatigue for the tragic incident, others suspect that he might have ended his life due to personal reasons.

"The officer was mowed down around 1am. A post mortem was conducted and a case of accidental death has been registered," said a Vasai GRP officer.

"Primary information shows that he was crossing the tracks when the incident took place. However, we are investigating the case through all angles," said a senior GRP officer.
