This is the fifth derailment on Indian Railways in less than a week.

Railway authorities said that the train was heading for Andheri from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on the harbour line. It was manuerving a crossover and approaching Mahim station when four coaches derailed. "It seemed as if the motorman didn't realise that the train had derailed. There was smoke around and I saw women jumping. So I jumped once the speed had reduced," said B Kanaujia, another commuter who suffered a fractured leg.

The middle portion of the local wobbled and four coaches derailed.

The commuters said that they experienced sudden jerks. "All of a sudden there was drastic movement inside the coach. We realised that the coach was tilting and so we started jumping one after the other from the moving train," said Siddhi Pale, a resident of Sewri who boarded the train for Vile Parle.

"The coaches were rerailed at 4pm," said Ravindra Bhakar, Chief PRO, Western Railway.
