Motorists plying between Mumbai and Thane are in for more traffic snarls as the barricading work for the construction of the 32-km-long Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro-4 corridor will start in a week's time. Motorists are already facing traffic issues with the Mumbra bypass remaining shut for repair work.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is executing the Metro-4 project, has said that installation of barricades will start on LBS Marg and the Eastern Express Highway (EEH). Soil tests will be conducted before beginning the construction of Metro-4 corridor.
An MMRDA official said, "We will start the barricading work within a week and by the end of the monsoons, we aim to complete most of the barricading, after which by year end the construction will start in full force."
The deadline for completion of civil works for Metro-4 is around 30 months, which is around the end of 2020. The MMRDA, however, aims to make the Metro-4 corridor operational by 2021.
The MMRDA has appointed Tata Projects, China Harbour Engineering Limited, Reliance Infrastructure, and Astaldi to construct the Metro-4 corridor. This corridor is expected to carry more than 8 lakh passengers daily once it becomes operational, and is expected to decongest the suburban railway network.
Meanwhile, civil construction work on both Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro-2A and Dahisar East- Andheri East Metro-7 is 50 per cent complete. Both these corridors are to be made operational by 2020, for which RA Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, reviewed the project site on Monday and Tuesday, asking contractors to speed up the work and finish construction on time.
