In a bid to curb the increasing number of accidents and chaos during peak hours outside Churchgate railway station, the Mumbai Traffic police department has barricaded the street to convert the single lane into three lanes to ease the movement of light and heavy motor vehicles.

On a daily basis, thousands of vehicles pass the Maharshi Karve road connecting the Churchgate railway station. The peak hour rush outside the railway station in the evening leads to chaos.

Several complaints were made to the traffic department to curb the traffic woes outside the railway station.

"Due to the bus depot next to the railway station, the employees from the government and private offices rush to get back home and cross the road without noticing the vehicle. This leads to accidents and we had to place barricades as the street do not have speed breakers to reduce the speed of the vehicle," said a senior officer from the traffic police department.

"On a temporary basis, we converted the single lane into three lanes to first ascertain the result. We have now decided to compulsorily block gaps between the dividers so that the pedestrians do not cross the road. The last lane has been kept open only for heavy vehicles like buses and our policemen ensure that the speed of the vehicle is in control and the motorists follow lane discipline," said the officer.

"Our new traffic management policy is giving us effective results and the traffic woes of the motorists has been solved. The barricades are keeping the traffic in motion, and is also curbing accidents outside the Churchgate railway station. We deploy our team of policemen during peak hours in the morning and evening so that they guide the motorists and pedestrians. We are also conducting a survey in the city to enforce the barricading of streets for smooth flow of traffic," said Ashok Dudhe, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic City).
