The Sion-Matunga stretch of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar road has been experiencing major traffic jams due to digging up of roads. The affected area includes the Gandhi Market area at Sion.
Francis D'Souza, a resident of Sion, said, "A lot of repair work has been happening and it has led to a haphazard traffic situation. It takes over half an hour to cross this stretch. I have been experiencing snarls for the past three days."
Motorists commuting towards the city using the Sion-Panvel Highway also complained of major traffic snarls along the stretch. A traffic police officer said, "Officials have been deployed at various junctions near such spots to assist in diversions. The situation is likely to continue until the completion of the road work."
The south-bound traffic has been restricted. The officers said that Nathalal Parekh Marg from Badhwar Park and General Jaggannath Bhosale Marg upto Cooperage Road and EBST Road junction has been dug up.
"I travel from Mulund to Byculla regularly. Normally, it takes 40-45 minutes to reach from Mulund to Byculla; however, now (for the past two days), it's taking almost two hours. It takes more than an hour to cross Sion and Matunga only," said Subhash Dixit, a retired central railway officer.
