Traffic disrupted on Eastern Express Highway in Mumbai

South bound traffic was severely disrupted after a trailer overturned near Highway Apartment at Suman Nagar late on Saturday.

South bound traffic was severely disrupted after a tanker carrying hot tar overturned near Highway Apartment at Suman Nagrar late on Saturday. Another tanker, also carrying tar, right behind the vehicle collided into the overturned tanker, said the traffic police adding that the hot tar had spilled on the road due to the mishap leading to major inconvenience to the motorists.

The traffic had to be diverted from Suman Nagar towards RCF circle. There was a huge backlog due to the mishap. The drivers of both the tankers managed to escape unhurt.

 According to the traffic police, the incident took place around 11:35 pm. The traffic police and the fire brigade reached the spot and were in the process of removing the trailer from the road.

Explaining the sequence of events, the traffic police said that the driver of the hot tar tanker was probably driving at high speed when he lost control and rammed into the divider due to which the vehicle overturned. Driver of  another tanker collided into the overturned vehicle before he could judge the situation.

"South bound traffic was heavily affected. We have sent two hippo cranes to remove the two vehicles from the spot. A team of at least 30 traffic policemen and fire officials were at the spot,"  said a traffic police officer.  No casualties were reported till the time of going to the press. Till 1:30am the process of removing the two vehicles and hot tar from the road and  was underway.
