In view of the increasing number of vehicles on road and endless traffic snarls in the city, the traffic department of Navi Mumbai has invited suggestions and objections from residents to help it make some important announcements for Kharghar.
In an effort to do away with the menace of illegal parking, the department has planned to daclare the stretch between Kharghar railway station and Hiranandani flyover at sector 2 as no-parking zone.
According to the traffic department, Kharghar node is the hub of education; it is home to many educational institutions and students from places including Mumbai and Thane come here. Apart from students who come by suburban trains, many students and other people come in their orivate vehicles and they park those around the railway station, especially between the station and Hiranandani chowk.
"Illegal parking creates huge problem and it also increases the risks of accidents and traffic congestion. "The cases of vehicle theft and brawl among vehicle owners were reported in the past. Taking all the pros and cons in to consideration, we have planned to make the stretch a no-parking zone," said Vijay Patil, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).
Cidco developed Navi Mumbai, but has failed to provide proper parking facilities. As a result, the culture of parking vehicles along the road side emerged. The town planning agency has now started developing parking lots in various areas, but people still prefer to park vehicles on roads so that they do not have to pay money.
"We have invited suggestions and objections from the city residents with respect to our proposals and based on their opinions the final decision will be taken by next week," Patil said.
