In a bid to curb instances of accidents at JJ flyover, the traffic branch of the city police have requested Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to install rubber speed-breakers. On Saturday, two persons, including a woman, had lost their lives after the motorcycle they were travelling on met with an accident on the flyover.

Has the MSRDC responded?

"We have recently requested the authority concerned to put rubber speed-breakers at four places on the 2 kilometre-long flyover. A response from the authority is still awaited. This will help in reducing the speed if some bikers sneak and manage to get entry on the flyover. Speed-breakers would be put near sharp curves both ways," joint commissioner of police, traffic, Dr BK Upadhyay told dna.

Bikers plying flover despite ban

As per Upadhyay, police is taking efforts but bikers should themselves follow the rule as plying of two-wheelers on the flyover has been banned. "Our men are there to stop bikers, but some dodge policemen and use the flyover. There have been instances when policemen have been assaulted and injured by bikers. Every day, scores of cases are registered. After all, people should also take care. We are going to intensify our measures," he said. "There are no speed-breakers on the JJ flyover at present. The bikers simply refuse to follow the rule and continue to use the flyover risking their lives," said senior police inspector Sunil Kavlekar of Pydhonie police station.

Youth killed in accident was trying to dodge cops

A 22-year-old motorcyclist, Mohammed Rafiq and his sister-in-law, Asmaa Shafiq, 21, who was riding pillion, were killed after their bike rammed into the railings on JJflyover around 6.15pm on Saturday. Rafiq and Asmaa, who were residents of Nehru Nagar in Kurla (East), were not wearing helmets when the incident took place. "Rafiq tried to dodge the traffic police near the flyover's mouth when his motorcycle skidded. The two were thrown off the bike and they fell on the other side of the road," said an officer from Pydhonie police station. Rafiq died on the spot and Asmaa was declared dead after being taken to JJ Hospital.
