Traffic congestion at Freeway end prompts new bridge plan

Ever since the Freeway was inaugurated on June 13, 2013, motorists have witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic during peak hours on the southern end of P D'Mello Road. The congestion is witnessed particularly between Orange Gate and GPO traffic junction and it takes close to half an hour to cross this 2.5km stretch.

Traffic snarls on the southern end of Eastern Freeway have pushed the MMRDA to plan an elevated road between Carnac Bunder and Mint Road on P D'Mello Road that can be termed as an extension of the Freeway.

As per the planning being done by MMRDA officials to troubleshoot the problem arising between Orange Gate and the GPO on P D'Mello Road, once a motorist driving from Chembur gets off Eastern Freeway after crossing the traffic junction, another elevated road will head straight to Swami Dayanand Saraswati Chowk at Fort. However, encroachments need to go to make this flyover a reality.

The jams are largely due to heavy vehicles entering Mumbai Port through Yellow Gate at Carnac Bunder junction. This leads to spillover of traffic on either ends of P D'Mello Road.

"A consultant will be appointed to study the project's feasibility and other technical details. The plan is at a conceptual stage and was suggested by the Central Railway last month," said an MMRDA official.

MMRDA's initial plans have two options — either a lane on either side or two lanes. Having lesser lanes will cost Rs50 crore and a four-lane bridge is estimated to cost Rs80 crore.

If railways is also planned along this flyover, the project cost will increase substantially. The railway component is likely to be an offshoot of Harbour line network in South Mumbai.

Eastern Freeway has substantially reduced travel time for motorists as it cuts across major and minor traffic junctions and signals between Ghatkopar-Mulund Link Road and South Mumbai near Fort.
