Following the chief minster's stance sticking to Local Body Tax (LBT), the traders association has now softened its stand saying that it's ready for dialogue with government to simplify the LBT process.

"The government seems to be confused whether it wants to collect LBT or revenue. We are ready to pay the revenue whatever it may apply, "said Vinesh Mehta, FAM treasurer.

Mehta added that we are continuing with our indefinite strike but will discuss the issues with government on Monday. "The government must bring the LBT unde the VAT in all municipal corporations,"demanded Mehta alleging that the government is misguiding the citizens on LBT by publishing advertisement in newspaper.

Meanwhile, the FAM has organized a 'Candle March' on Sunday, May 12, at Gateway of India at 7 pm.

The Federation of retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) has written to the Chief Minster objecting his clarification about LBT affecting civic body's autonomy and villagers objection. "While the CM says that 50% living in villages will object for paying surcharge on VAT, the government records reveal that it only contributes only 7-8% to revenue,"said Viren Shah, president of FRTWA.

Shah added that it is the marginal thing which can be solved provided that the government should agree for it. "Bringing LBT under VAT, we don't mean to take away the civic body's autonomy. A separate payment mechanism can be brought in to resolve the issue," said Shah.

However, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has supported the LBT but want simplifying procedure for the LBT. "Taking away their financial autonomy by withdrawing LBT will severally affect the Urban Local Body's capacity to perform the designated tasks resulting in inferior services to the citizens. Therefore, it’s imperative that they remain financially stronger and independent with the support of LBT," FICCI said in a statement.
