A 10 year old girl uses her employer’s lipstick and is brutally tortured and killed as punishment. This is the apparent motive that police have found for the alleged murder of Sonu, the 10-year-old domestic worker who was found dead, hanging from a ceiling fan in an Andheri flat recently.
According to the police, “It is thought that Roma Bhatia, the daughter of the house, entered a room and found Sonu trying on lipstick. She reportedly got furious and beat the girl up. Roma then told her mother that she had taught Sonu a lesson and tied her up. Roma Bhatia has been arrested,” said the police, in an attempt to reconstruct the crime.
Earlier, based on initial evidence, police had thought it was a case of rape and murder. Sonu’s employers, Vinod Shobhraj Gajaria, his wife Madhu, son Prakash and now daughter Roma have all been arrested. Sonu had come from Bhopal to work as a domestic help at the Gajarias flat in the Lokhandawala complex.
The police also re-investigated the rape angle, only to discover details of grisly torture. Bipin Bihari, additional commissioner of police (west), said, “I had some doubts. I had found certain objects when I visited the crime scene. I met a group of doctors on Wednesday and put forward new evidence we had collected. We went to the spot again and finally came to the conclusion that a heavy metal object, probably covered with chilli powder, was inserted into the poor girl’s genitals and she was physically tortured in a barbaric way. This was confirmed by the forensic report.”
The suspicion of torture rather than rape was raised also because no semen was found in the girl by the medical examiner.
