Just days after a team from the Legal Metrology Organisation (LMO) seized medical equipment related to angioplasty from the Lilavati Hospital in Bandra (West), it has come down on several other top city hospitals.

Six more hospitals were inspected for compliance under the Legal Metrology Rules and Packaged Commodity Rules. Fortis Hospital in Mulund, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri, Asian Heart Institute in Bandra, Hiranandani Hospital in Powai, Global Hospital in Parel and HN Hospital (Reliance Foundation) Girgaon were inspected. Packaged commodities used during operations were checked for the name and address of the importer, customer care number and the date of import among others.

Packaging of the equipments in most of the hospitals either did not mention the MRP price at all or had their prices smudged. Several other details were missing from the packaging as well.

Officials also found a huge different in the MRP that was printed on the package, that which was charged by the supplier and the final price of it being sold to the patients.

Hospitals across the country are already under the scanner for the pricing of stents used during heart surgeries and have found to be charging around 1,000 times the original cost.

The inspections were carried out following orders from Grirish Bapat, minister for food, civil supplies and consumer protection department.

Amitabh Gupta, controller, LMO, has appealed to the patients to remain alert during hospitalization. Complaints can be lodged by phone (022-22886666 or e-mail at dclmms_complaints@yahoo.com.
