Nearly 20-40% seats in the top engineering colleges in the state remained vacant in the first round of admission which ended on Saturday, reveals a data released by the directorate of technical education of Maharashtra.

Surprisingly, this is the case in the most sought after branches like computer engineering, IT and mechanical.

In Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, over 36 out of 60 seats in computer engineering and 13 out of 60 in IT have remained vacant. Only 19 from 60 seats could be filled in computer engineering branch at College of Engineering, Pune. Other branches in the two autonomous centres had seen as much as 70% vacancy. Other government institutes too saw a steep fall in admission this year, which is very unusual.

Meanwhile, 70% vacancy was observed in private institutes.
