Criticising the state cabinet’s decision to pay compensation to the tune of Rs 142 crore to toll operators in the state for the losses they suffered during the 21 days when the toll booths were shut in November after demonetization was announced, Congress state unit spokesperson Sachin Sawant on Saturday questioned whether patriotism was to be shown by only farmers and the poor.

The central government announced to keep 41 toll booths on highways shut for 21 days after demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes on November 8 last year to avoid inconveniencing people over the change to pay toll.

Sawant pointed out there were many people who lost their lives while waiting in queue at banks for withdrawing their own money.

Farmers did not fetch the right price for their produce as they had no option but to sell their produce at whatever price they received. Sawant was quick to point out that if the state government has decided to compensate toll booth operators for the losses they incurred during the demonetization period, why is it not compensating those farmers who incurred losses during the same period.

The toll operators in Mumbai have incurred losses to the tune of Rs 100 crore during those 21 days. The other toll booths in the state have incurred Rs 42 crore loss due to the closure of toll booths for 21 days.

Running in losses

As far as Mumbai is concerned, there are five toll plazas at entry points, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway toll as well as the Bandra-Worli sea link toll, which were shut down during that period.
These toll plazas incurred a cumulative loss amounting to Rs 100 crore. The other toll booths in the state incurred Rs 42 crore loss.
