A family trip from Mumbai to Goa turned sour when a 18-month-old girl fell unconscious after sipping masala tea that was purchased from Malad.

After closely going through the product details, the family realised that the tea had crossed its expiry date and it's packaging label was tampered with. Legal Metrology Organisation has initiated probe in the matter.

On October 22, Malad resident Satish Kariya, a senior executive in a private company, had bought D'aromas instant premix masala tea from a Malad store.

The next day, the family left for a trip to Goa and on October 24, when Kariya's daughter Tashi, was given a sip of tea by her mother, she fell unconscious after few minutes.

"Tashi gained consciousness a few hours later. The tea tasted really bad. The product has crossed it's expiry date and a new label of the expiry date was pasted," said Kariya.

He added, "On reaching Mumbai, when I confronted the store owner, he refused to listen to me. I wrote to D'aromas about the issue and they promised to enquire about the incident. On finding that the store continued to sell the tea having tampered packaging details, I approached LMO to intervene in the matter."

Amitabh Gupta, Controller of LMO, said. "We are probing the case and action will be taken if such incident has taken place."
