Given the ever rising population in Thane city, the civic body is finding it difficult to provide water to the buildings coming up in Ghodbunder Road and beyond. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) therefore, has refused to supply water to the upcoming residences in the city, forcing builders to make their own provisions.

TMC had made provisions to supply water to a population of 20 lakh Thanekars, assuming the city would reach that number only by 2017-18. "But, Thane already has a population of 20 lakh and it will only increase in the coming months. Fearing a shortage of water in the future, we have taken a decision to stop services to new buildings. Henceforth, while issuing an NOC, we will specify that the corporation will not offer water facilities. The onus then lies on the builder to facilitate water supply to the residents," says Sandeep Malvi, PRO, TMC.

"If TMC is not responsible for our water woes, then whom do we go to if we face any problem? Once a society is formed, the builder shrugs off all his responsibilities. What can we residents do then? Even if there is a provision for rainwater harvesting system, it will not last the year," asks Rishi Vaidya, who recently booked a flat in Ghodbunder Road.

dna had earlier reported about the water woes of the residents of Ghodbunder Road. Already the existing water tank in Ghodbunder Road, which has capacity of 18 million litres, is proving inadequate for the residents. In such a time, new constructions are only adding to their woes. "In the last decade, there has been rapid development on this stretch, leading to water shortage. As there is no pipeline that will connect water to this part of Thane, a separate tank was built, which is not sufficient anymore," says Raj Rajpurkar, a resident of Ghodbunder Road.

"We are yet to receive sanction of Rs4.5 crore for going ahead with the water supply work for the existing population. Once that is approved, we shall start proper services to the existing population and solve their water woes. But, we are not in the position to provide water supply to the new buildings," adds Malvi.
