In his continuous efforts to revamp Thane's infrastructure, the Thane Municipal Corporation chief Sanjeev Jaiswal has come up with another idea – to develop city's select roads on international standards.

As of now, 11 streets have been chosen to be developed as model roads and these roads will have broader footpaths and proper traffic rules will be implemented for smooth traffic flow on the stretch.

Apart from the current road widening work undertaken by the civic body at Pokharan Road Nos1 and 2, Jaiswal has proposed this ambitious plan to transform Thane's roads. He aims to cut down on the daily ordeal of the motorists.

Ready with its initial list, the civic officials are now working on the budget, which will be worked out in next year's budget and the selected roads will soon be crafted as model zones. The road widening has already started at Vartak Nagar and will slowly be extended to other roads as well.

"I had planned to develop model roads since a long time, but it is now that we have zeroed in on 11 streets, which will be developed as model roads with good street infrastructure," said the chief.

The model roads will have amenities like footpath benches, signages, bus stops, among other amenities.

Model roads have been finalised at Mumbra, Kalwa, Uthalsar, Naupada, Kopri, Wagle Estate, Raila Devi, Vartak Nagar and two wide stretch of Manpada and Majiwada road.

A dedicated team comprising officials from the public works department (PWD), town planning and ward offices have put in their efforts to select the roads, which will be widened and developed further. Meanwhile, residents and activists demand that there are other roads, too, that need to be widened and majority of these roads start from Thane station.

"While commuting from Thane station, we get stuck in bottleneck traffic at Synagogue chowk and beyond even that. These roads have heavy traffic, but are narrow. So, something should be done to improve these roads as well," said Deodhar Patil a resident.

Talking about road widening across the city, Jaiswal said, "We have reviewed the prospect of road widening at Bhayander Pada, Naupada, and Station road."

The DP road across Bhayander Pada will be widened at 40m and 30m on each side respectively. Similarly, the widening will be at 40m and 30m from Vedant hospital to Vihang Valley. From Grand Square till Park Wood 30m on each side. Jaiswal also visited Subhash road, Shivaji lane, Station road, MH High School and instructed the town planning officials to carry out necessary demolitions. He has received good response from people who promised to cooperate during widening.
