Illegal showrooms and garages that park their cars on the service roads of Thane will now be taken to task. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will henceforth lodge police complaints against such showrooms, as well as bars.

The various service roads in Thane were built by the TMC for the quick movement of vehicles, especially during peak hours. However, over the years, many illegal car showrooms, garages and even bars have come up on these roads and blocked them, because of which the service roads remain underutilised.

Hence, TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal has ordered officials to take action against these illegal encroachers for parking vehicles on the road and blocking traffic. "As per the commissioner's instructions, an FIR will be lodged against the offenders who park vehicles on the service road," said Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer, TMC.

A special committee consisting of TMC officials has also been formed to check the legality of these bars, garages and showrooms. This committee will go through documents and if they find the constructions to be illegal, action will be taken.

"We will first lodge a police complaint and if the offenders continue to violate rules, their premises will be sealed," Malvi said.

Thanekars have welcomed this decision since after the roads are widened, they will get more driving space on the service roads. "We have been demanding this action for a long time and welcome the commissioner's decision to free the service roads of these encroachers," said Chandrahas Tawde, an activist from Thane.

He added: "It was because of this encroachment by garages at Teen petrol pump that the road there was made one-way. The TMC should also punish those municipal officials who allowed these encroachments to take place. All those involved, be it politicians or TMC ward officials, should be criminally prosecuted and punished."
