The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) which had been quite soft on property tax defaulters, has now decided to be stern with defaulters. After receiving a mild response till now to their amnesty scheme of 50% rebate on property tax to defaulters, it will go for auction of the sealed properties.
Following Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's (KDMC) aggressive approach in recovering dues from property tax defaulters, the TMC has now decided to auction sealed properties, if dues are not paid. The notice for the same will be issued within the next two days.

"The amnesty scheme has received a lukewarm response, but, we will wait for the last date which is March 21. Generally, it is during the last two days of the scheme, that people queue up to pay their property dues," says an official from TMC's property tax department.
"So, we appeal people to pay their taxes by March 21 as such amnesty schemes are not announced every year," says Omprakash Divate, deputy commissioner of tax, TMC.
The TMC has a target of Rs392 crore for property tax recovery this year. They recovered 75% or Rs296 crores of dues till March 16. However, there are many who defaulted on paying the dues and TMC has sealed 1,400 plus commercial properties.
"Out of these, 735 have paid their property tax and got their properties unsealed. If the remaining defaulters do not pay, we will issue a notice for auction in the next two days and the auction will be held after 15 days," adds the deputy commissioner.
