In a bid to install modern toilets in its jurisdiction, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with organisation 'Habitat for Humanity'.
Giving momentum to the initiative by signing the MoU, TMC chief Sanjeev Jaiswal gave green signal to the project in a meeting held on Friday.
The civic chief had earlier shared that he had plans to modify the amenities in city. Under the same initiative, he has given nod to the project and struck the deal.
As per the model presented by Habitat for Humanity, separate toilets will be made for men, women, kids as well as for the differently-abled, which will be well-equipped with all the facilities, including a washroom and changing room.
Initially the facility will be installed at 10 places and after assessing the utility as well as depending on the response, the project will be expanded in different areas.
The cost of the installing the project will be borne by the organisation and the corporation will help them with selecting the venue for installation.
Earlier too, the civic body had experimented with mobile toilet units and had even installed e- toilet unit near Gadkari Rangayatan in 2011. The plan was to install 500 such units in the city, but apart from trail installation at Gadkari, the unit was nowhere seen in the city.
As the response for the e-toilet was poor, the idea was dropped by the corporation. This comes as a fresh attempt by the civic body to give modern toilets to the city, however like earlier, response will decide the further course of action.
Jaiswal said he is hopeful of receiving positive results. "This will be helpful in changing the face of the city and will also carry forward the idea of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan," he said.
