To protest against the upcoming project of construction 4G mobile towers by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., residents of Tilak Nagar area on Thursday started a signature campaign. Coming together under the name of Tilak Nagar Sangharsh Samiti, the residents are planning to hold a protest also this Saturday at the Sahyadri ground.
Talking to iamin, the residents said that erecting towers in this area is like encroaching on their right to enjoy open spaces.
"The five to six spots that have been identified for erecting these mobile towers are all open spaces like grounds and gardens. Once these towers come up, access to these places will become restricted. Then where will our children play? Where will senior citizens go for their walks?" said Adv. Nitin Nikam who is a member of the Samiti.
The residents are also apprehensive about the health hazards associated with these towers.
On Thursday, the first day of the signature campaign, members of Sangharsh Samiti got close to 250 signatures from the residents. They also plan to write to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the police officials about the issue. Adv Nikam told iamin that over 300 such towers are likely to come up across the city.
