Three college students from Navi Mumbai met a watery grave at Uran lake on Monday afternoon. Sanket Dhuri, Mangesh Ghorpade and Shailesh Kadale, all 19 years old, drowned after venturing into the water near Uran dam.

The students were part of a group of 10 teenagers from the same school, and had gone to Uran lake to celebrate Sanket's birthday. After the boys had lunch, Shailesh went with the other two to click a photograph in the water, and, in order to get a better picture, they ventured deep into the water.

Shailesh, who was leading the way, lost his balance. The other two tried catching him, but owing to the strong current, they too lost their balance and drowned.

The other students saw this happen and called some villagers for help, who then called the police as they did not know how to swim. However, by the time the cops arrived, the trio were nowhere to be seen.

The police launched a search for the boys with the help of some villagers, and eventually fished out the bodies of all three at around 6pm.

Senior PI Rajendra Galande, Uran police, said: "We have recovered their bodies and have filed an accidental death report. Two of the students were from ICL college in Vashi. The bodies were later sent to Uran Civil Hospital."
