Three Mumbai students steal the limelight in ICSE, ISC results

While Swayam Das topped ICSE, Abhijnan Chakraborty, Tansa Shah were 2 of the 7 ISC toppers

Mumbai was the cynosure of all eyes on Monday after the Council for Indian School Certificate declared the results of ICSE and ISC board exams (Class 10 and 12, respectively). Seven of the fifteen ICSE toppers and six of the 49 ISC toppers are from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Navi Mumbai boy Swayam Das emerged as the ICSE topper among all students within the country and abroad. Two city students — Abhijnan Chakraborty and Tansa Shah — were two of the seven first rank holders in ISC.

Swayam, a student of St Mary's ICSE School in Koparkhairane scored 99.40 per cent with a perfect 100 in Maths, Computer, and History. "While I expected to score well, topping the exams definitely comes as a surprise. Solving a lot of practice papers and studying consistently helped me achieve the feat," he said while speaking to DNA.

Swayam's class teacher Sharada Kalidas said that he is a very diligent and meticulous student. "He is an extremely humble student and always respects elders and teachers," she added. Swayam wants to take up Science and plans to join the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), one of the country's premier science institutes.

"We are all happy with his decision to take up Science," said his father Sanjib Das, who is a scientist.

Abhijnan Chakraborty, a student of Lilavatibai Podar School in Santacruz and Tansa Shah from the Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort scored 99.50 per cent in the ISC exams. "I did not expect to top but the aim was to score above 98 per cent. I want to take up Chemistry in my graduation and do further research in the subject later," added Chakraborty, who is an avid football and cricket fan.

"I stopped watching TV to concentrate on my exams for the past 2 years," he added.

Tansa credited her success to her supportive parents and her school. "I also participated in a lot of other activities like public debates, Model United Nations," she said.

Anokhi Mehta, Rank 2, ICSE (99.2 %), Jamnabai Narsee School, Juhu Mumbai

“I was regular in my school and a disciplined student. My teachers' effort and school’s support helped me score well in my exams. I read my textbooks for five to six hours daily. To de-stress, I did yoga and swam regularly during exams. I wish to pursue a career in Actuarial Science in Insurance.”

“I never took tuitions to prepare for the boards. I believe in hard work and that’s what I did whole year. But my school teachers were also amazing. I love playing table tennis, singing, dancing, and watching movies. I wish to follow my father's footsteps and become a Chartered Accountant.”

Rewati Shitole, Rand 3, ISC (99%), Smt Sulochanadevi Singhania School, Thane

“I believe in regular studies. Before exams I used to study for eight to ten hours a day. My mother was very supportive. I have plans to study abroad and make a career in Computers in the United States. I love dancing and am a degree holder in Bharatnatyam.”

EXTRAORDINARY FEAT

Sakshi Rathi, ICSE, St John’s Universal School, Goregaon, 92.20%

Sakshi lost her mother to brain hemorrhage in the middle of her exams.“I had written my History exams the previous day and had my Geography paper four days after my mother passed away. It was very difficult for me to prepare for the exams. With the support of my father and my elder sister, I could manage to get a good score. I owe this to my mother," she added. 

Vedant Damani, ICSE, Vibgyor High, Malad, 95.02%

Vedant Damani, a student of Vibgyor High in Malad fell after he twisted his leg in the house a day before the exam. When Damani fell down, a few glass pieces of a broken vase entered his elbow. He underwent a surgery immediately and managed to write all his papers himself and scored 95.02%. “I had my History paper the day after my accident for which I had fortunately studied in advance. I studied for eight hours to ensure that my exams are not affected,” he added. 

Saaket Basarkar, ICSE, Universal High School Thane, 93.60%

Saaket was diagnosed with Ocular Myasthenia in December 2017, which means that the eyeball in his right eye droops and he can only see with his left eye. Despite this condition, Saaket scored a 98 out of 100 in Computers. “It was strenuous for me to study with one eye, especially for a subject like Computers, which requires looking at the screen. I made sure that I took breaks in between,” he added. 

Suchit Seth, ISC, Jamnabai Narsee School, Juhu, 75.80%

Suchit Seth suffers from Cerebral Palsy. Seth overcame all the hardships that come with the condition, which includes trouble with motor movements. “I had taken a writer from my school as I could not write with my condition. I made sure that I read the textbooks and solved all the previous year’s papers to give my best shot. I am happy that I managed a decent score,” he added. Seth wants to become a Television Critic. 

Ananth and Siddharth Preetham, ISC, Ryan International School, Navi Mumbai 97.05% and 96.05% respectively 

Ananth and Siddharth, twins from Navi Mumbai aced the examinations with near identical scores. The brothers studied together and now want to take up the same course — Computer Science in Robotics in USA. “We are happy that our scores are near identical. We studied together and ensured that we helped each other. Studying together helped us immensely,” said Ananth.
