Three ace institutions of Mumbai University, viz. JJ School of Arts, JJ School of Architecture and JJ Institute of Applied Arts have been granted academic autonomy on Tuesday. A decision in this regard was taken by the state Cabinet. With the exclusion of three prominent government colleges, Mumbai University which has nearly 780 colleges under its umbrella has become lighter by three institutes. Interestingly, 26 new colleges were affiliated to varsity this year only.

These colleges will now join the list of few other ace institutions like St Xavier's College which obtained academic autonomy from University of Mumbai in last few years.

These heritage institutes—all flanked in front of iconic CST station building in Mumbai—will now have freedom to design innovative courses, can frame syllabus as per the latest trends and can conduct exams. Dr MA Khan, Registrar of the University of Mumbai, said, "However, degrees will be granted by University only. Recruitment in these colleges will also need University approval."
