The Parksite police on Wednesday arrested three persons for allegedly trying to push a 32-year-old transgender activist to end her life by sending her threat messages. The victim had alleged that because the police refused to file a First Information Report (FIR), she had taken the extreme step in depression. Fortunately, she was saved by her flatmates in a nick of time.
Anita Wadekar, a resident of Amrut Nagar in Ghatkopar, was getting life threats for the past three days on her WhatsApp number and over phone calls. Wadekar rushed to the Parksite police station but was allegedly told to go away. Later, when her flatmates were sleeping, Wadekar used a dupatta to hang herself from the ceiling fan. When she pushed the table on which she stood, the thud woke up one of her flatmates and she was saved. Wadekar works as a field officer with Kinnar Maa Samajik Sanstha Trust (KMSST), an NGO which works for the development of transgender community.
Vilas Jadhav, Senior Police Inspector at Parksite police station, said: “We have arrested three persons in this regard. One of the accused is on the run. All the accused have been booked under section 306 (abetment of suicide), 511 (attempt to commit an offence), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code. We are investigating the case further.”
Wadekar was discharged from Rajawadi Hospital on Monday. “I need justice. I have been working for the betterment of our community but anti-social elements are forcing us to indulge in prostitution and begging. Police should take strictest action against the accused involved,” said Wadekar.
