There has been a three-fold rise in the number of sensitive polling booths in the city. For the 2012 civic polls, there were 203 sensitive polling booths out of a total 8,326 polling stations. In 2017, the civic election department has identified about 630 sensitive polling booths out of a total of 7,304 polling stations. Of the 603 sensitive polling booths, 17 of them have been notified as 'hyper-sensitive' booths.
The broad parameters to define sensitive booths is decided by how strong the political rivalry between candidates and parties in the area are, chances of bogus voting, pressure built by candidates on voters, the communal aspect, political crimes that took place in the area in the past or other significant happenings. During the last civic elections, the number of hyper-sensitive polling booths were identified only in Kurla and Chembur. However, this time around, 11 of 17 hyper-sensitive booths have been identified in South Mumbai, including Bhendi Bazaar, Bohari Mohalla, Null Bazaar, Nagpada, Mohammed Ali Road, Madanpura, Dongri and Maulana Azad Road, among others.
Apart from hyper-sensitive booths, Govandi, Chembur (58), Mankhurd (89), Kurla (74), Malad (56), Mumbai Central (56) and Jogeshwari (30) have the highest number of sensitive polling booths. Meanwhile, Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivli do not have sensitive or hyper-sensitive booths.
