Three youths, who allegedly assaulted a 23-year-old and her male friend in Belapur late on Monday night, have been arrested by the Belapur police.
According to the police, the victim, a resident of Nerul’s sector 44, arrived at the petrol pump near Income Tax Colony at Belapur with a male friend. As soon as she got down from her vehicle around 11.45pm, the accused trio, who were loitering in the area, passed some lewd comments.
“The victim initially ignored them and tried to leave the place after purchasing the fuel. However, when the culprits continued to pass lewd comments, her friend protested and asked them to keep quiet,” said Shekhar Tore, senior police inspector from Belapur police station.
This infuriated the culprits, who then came forward and assaulted the man in the presence of his friend. In a fit of rage, one of them even hit the woman on her back.
“One of our beat marshal teams passing by spotted the ruckus and got hold of the culprits from the spot. The accused were then taken to the police station. We later arrested them,” he said.
The arrested men have been identified as Sadique Shaikh, 22, a resident of Sanpada; Shivdas Paramveer, 22, a resident of Belapur, and Harshad Mane, 20, a resident of Nerul.

They were produced before the judicial court on Tuesday and have been remanded to police custody for two days.
