20-year-old Deepa Unnikrishnan is a rapper but she raps for a cause. Deepa in her unique style uses her rapping skills to talk about women empowerment and spread messages about breaking various social barriers.

Deepa, a Dombivali resident began rapping in 2012 and since then has been contributing to the women's cause through her raps as she felt that protests and rallies do not have much impact on the masses the way it should. Deepa thus began using music for her messages to be heard by the government and the public in general.

Speaking with iamin, Deepa said, “I quit CA long ago for music and now have started pursuing my M Com. My raps aim to break the idea of social acceptance, and being the change one wants to see. The idea of rapping was a female getting into something that is a male dominated area in India.”

Currently pursuing her Masters in Commerce from Institute of Open and Distance Learning of the Mumbai University, Deepa gave up her Chartered Accountant (CA) studies to pursue music. She has also been using various media like YouTube to release her raps and related videos to reach more and more people.

Deepa's song 'Talk My Way' was nominated for Radio City 91.1 Freedom Awards last year as she became the only female rapper to make it to this category.
