Residents of Nanbhat village in Nalasopara managed to catch two thieves after the duo along with one of their associates sat drinking expensive scotch whisky post-robbery. The owners of the house were out on a trip to Bangalore when locals spotted unusual activity inside the bungalow and entered it only to catch the culprits.

The accused persons, Prasad Chavan (19), Sunil Sakpal (25) and Anna Kotian (29), all residents of Virar East, sneaked into the bungalow belonging to one Francis Lopes after 9 pm when the entire village usually goes to sleep.

They broke into Lopes' bungalow and packed up a laptop and other valuables. They were about to leave when they stumbled upon expensive liquor in Lopes' bungalow. Failing to resist their temptation, the trio sat down to drink before fleeing. Unfortunately for them, Lopes' neighbours noticed unusual activity inside the bungalow and managed to enter it. While the villagers nabbed Chavan and Sakpal, Kotian managed to give them the slip.

"After rummaging thorough the house, the thieves packed all valuables but decided to drink the expensive liquor before leaving. When the villagers handed them over to us, they were drunk and we sent them for medical check up before arresting them," said a Nalasopara police officer.

"After catching the thieves, the locals had thrashed them. They later tied the duo to prevent them from fleeing. When the villagers informed us about the incident, we requested them not to lynch the thieves which would land them in trouble," said the officer.

According to Suhas Kamble, sub-inspector at the Nalasopara police station, the duo has been charged with house-breaking and attempted theft. The accused persons were habitual offenders, said Kamble, adding that they would be produced before a Vasai court on Friday.
