A stray dog that fought off five thieves who tried to break into a chawl in Kandivli's Samta Nagar on Tuesday night was beaten up mercilessly by the miscreants before they fled.

The canine, who was trashed with wooden sticks, is battling for life. He has been christened 'He-Man' in honour of his bravery by the NGO managing his treatment.

On hearing his barks, the chawl's residents rushed out to see the dog, who they have raised since he was a puppy, writhing in pain. They also saw the thieves running a few metres ahead. "He was on the ground, moaning in pain. He could not move," said Lalit Kadam, a resident.

Kadam immediately called up Bird Helpline, an animal NGO, which rushed the dog to a clinic in Borivli. Dr Vikram Dave, who is treating the dog, told dna, "He has not stopped crying since he was brought to me and cannot move. Chances of survival are slim because there is a blood clot in his brain."

The Bird Helpline is paying for He-Man's treatment through donations. Harsh Shah, the NGO's founder, said, "Strays dogs are extremely misunderstood in Mumbai. They have saved people from leopard attacks, snake attacks, even to the extent of laying down their lives. Yet, they suffer such cruelty. Such cases are rising day by day. People need to understand that they are not a nuisance, they are our friends and saviours," said Harsh Shah, founder of Bird Helpline.

Animal welfare officer Meet Ashar said, "In the past six months, we have received 15 cases of stray dogs being attacked while safeguarding societies against robbery. Strays have fought even after being severely injured. If their population is kept in check with the help of ongoing sterilization programmes of the municipal corporations, they are not a menace at all."

Ravindra Patil, senior inspector from Samta Nagar police station, said, "The complainants have approached us. We are checking the facts and accordingly, a case will be registered."
