In an incident that raises questions once again about the safety of female commuters in the city's local trains, a 19-year-old was thrown out of a Churchgate-bound running train by a thief on Thursday night after she refused to give him money. There were no policemen inside the Second Class ladies compartment at the time of the incident. Komal Chavan, who lives in Nallasopara, was on her way back home from Virar when she was thrown out of the train between Virar and Nallasopara. She was rushed to a private hospital and is recovering from the injuries.

Chavan works at a lottery store in Virar and was going home to Samel Pada after completing her shift at 9.30pm. She boarded the 9.49 Virar to Churchgate local from platform no 2, and a man in his 30s boarded the compartment just as the train began to move.

He demanded money forcefully from Chavan, who refused to part with it.

"Before I could react," says Chavan, "he pulled me by my hair and dragged me towards the door. He pushed me out on Virar's platform no 8 and I fell on the tracks as the train sped off."

"We have retrieved the footage from the CCTV cameras installed at the railway platform which captured the accused," said police inspector Rajendra Bhosale, of the Vasai Government Railway Police. "We have registered the case under sections 393 (Attempt to commit robbery), 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 356 (Assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) of the Indian Penal Code against the unidentified person. We are investigating further and the accused will be soon behind the bars."
