The transport ministry to issue new autorickshaw permits in Navi Mumbai

The transport ministry will be issuing new autorickshaw permits soon; it last issued permits on November 26, 1997. Back then, the ministry had issued 13,623 permits in all, 5,435 of which expired and currently, there are 8,188 permits in all.

Approximately, 50% of the permits will be issued fresh from the 5,435 permits that were revoked. In 1997, 3,636 permits expired, whereas 742 permits were cancelled by Thane RTO and 651 were not renewed. Simply put, in all 5,029 permits were revoked in the same year. The government is going to issue 2,687 fresh permits in Navi Mumbai on public demand. 

There will be 10,875 permits in all, including current number - 8,188 - as per the recent orders by the transport commissioner. The authority is going to issue 3262 permits in Panvel , 3,747 in Thane, and 5,026 in Kalyan.

As on today, 815 school vehicles in Navi Mumbai are registered with Vashi Dy RTO office, including buses, vans and other private vehicles. Of these, RTO issued permits to 55 mini school vans and remaining approx 400 school transports are under the consideration of transport ministry, said Sanjay Dhaygude,the Dy RTO Vashi officer. He added, Additional permits, approximately 2,500-3,000 of them, will be issued and are under process. Forty-seven permits have been issued for the taxis in Navi Mumbai. The drive is going to held on soon by the RTO between January 27 to 31 on due taxes,black glasses on four wheelers, fancy number plate on vehicles etc.

To be eligible for a permit, an autorickshaw driver must hold a valid auto driving license and a badge. He should be a resident of Maharashtra for 15 years and should have a domicile certificate as a proof. There should not be any criminal case registered against him and he will have to submit a character certificate from a police station. He should not be working in private or public sector, and would need an affidavit for it. A permit will be given to those auto drivers with new autorikshaws and CNG and Electronic metres are necessary in autorikshaw. Transport Commissioner is planning to fix GPS or GPRS system in future and it will be compulsary as per government policy to issue permit.

The cost for the registration of permit is rs 100 and those using E-Government system will be cost rs 120 per form. Those interested can register online and there will be a lucky draw. Interested applicants can apply between January 27 and February 15. When asked, the secretary of rickshaw union, Sunil Borde, said, Approximately 2,000-3,000 auto drivers will apply. But how will these drivers apply online as they are not educated I do not understand the system.
