He’s rarely shaken, seldom stirred but the suave Martin Peter has landed right back in the middle of some spirited efforts to reinvent Mumbai’s social networking model. The formerly London-based veteran of the nightlife industry has now taken the game up a notch from the time he’d brought down New York’s classy concept of French Tuesdays to India nearly a decade ago.
This time his social club Tag Thursday — a by-invitation-only community celebrating Mumbai chic — has gained considerable traction in the city with some of the best SoBo nightclubs vying for his monthly soirees. It’s heartening to know that there is something of a movement gaining ground with a whole bunch of like-minded people trying to create specific communities by exploiting micro-identities - expats, middle-aged singles, teeny boppers - but the fine of hosting is clearly not everyone’s gift or forte. So while Martin’s eclectic guest list does include the likes of Yash Birla, Arjun Khanna, Krsna Mehta, Luke Kenny and Candice Pinto, the real energy comes from the 200-odd young sophisticates who keep coming back for more. Good going.
