The western suburbs are known for their lush green expanses, thanks to the natural forest of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. But there's more reason to cheer as the suburb of Malad gets its first ever man-made forest garden. Located adjacent to Infinity Mall 2, off Link Road, work on the new garden has already commenced.

The garden, spread over 6.5 acres of land, will have most amenities that are available in international forest gardens. The area will have 4,500 varieties of flora, pan-India varieties of palm trees, medicinal plants and fruit trees to attract local and migratory birds. It would also have a butterfly park, lotus pond, Mumbai's longest jogging track, amphitheatre, open gymnasium, children's play area, walking track for senior citizens and meditation camps.

Devendra Kumar Jain, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, P/North ward, says, "The development of the garden has commenced. The BMC has appointed leading MNC garden-development agencies that have some of the best designers from the field of forest garden development. We are monitoring the garden's development process on a day-to-day basis; it is likely to be completed as per the sanctioned design and schedule."

Aslam Shaikh, a local MLA, who is spending money from his area development fund for this cause, said, "Forest gardens form part of an ecological gardening and farming approach. This will be the biggest "Developed Forest Garden" in Mumbai, providing much-needed leisure space for residents of Malad and surrounding areas." He adds, "The estimated project cost for this garden is 80 lakhs and it would be completed in eight months. The park will be well lit and would be manned round the clock by security guards. The public can enter the garden free of cost."

Shashi Rakesh Rathod, a resident of Chincholi Bunder says, "It is pleasant news that such a forest garden is coming up in Malad. This would be great for jogging or long walks in the morning and evening. We would be glad to see various initiatives and activities conducted there."
