Kalina has quite a few gems hidden in its kitty, especially when it comes to food. And for those who have a weakness for 'Indianised' Chinese, there's King Chilli, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, which stands apart for its food and service.

But first…there are two restaurants with the name King Chilli in Kalina Market. The one we are talking about is the one opposite HDFC Bank ATM/Gala Art Gallery and next to the My Idea store. The restaurant entrance is unassuming with no visible fanfare. However, you will see a large crowd of people late in the evening (and even on weekdays) waiting for their takeaway orders or waiting to be seated.

King Chilli is proud to be a non-authentic Chinese restaurant and with a large clientele to back them, so much so that crowds spill onto the road waiting to be seated—a scene you'd most likely associate with an affluent restaurant. It is also one of the few restaurants, which serves delicious dumplings and momos…rare for an Indian-Chinese restaurant.

The restaurant boasts of a clean and clutter-free space with music that isn't too loud—it's just right for people to make conversation. What is different about the restaurant, when compared to other Chinese restaurants, is the quiet and attentive staff. They have good knowledge of the menu and can even personalise a dish to suit your palate.
Jason Reynold, a resident of Kalina Market, regularly orders takeaways from King Chilli and is pretty happy with their large serving size. Reynold says, "The food here is soulful and cooked with the right balance of flavours. To top it all, they serve huge portions so it all turns out to be extremely pocket-friendly."

Some highly recommended dishes at King Chilli are the chicken momos, the American chicken chop suey and the crackling spinach chicken. We also recommend you try the Pad Thai noodles if you like your food to be slightly sweet. Adds Reynold, "Make sure you go in with a big appetite when you visit King Chilli and they will make sure you walk out with a big smile."

King Chilli, Kalina Market. Bill size: Rs 770 for dinner for two. No alcohol served.
