Taking a step forward to generate awareness on the need to save water, residents have formed a WhatsApp group titled, 'TCV water and waste forum' that aims at planning measures to deal with water crisis.

With more than 100 group members from different housing societies in the city, the members share the initiative which has been taken up in their respective society. The forum has lined up series of activities which include a summit cum contest to promote saving water.

School students, housing societies, college authorities and others will share their ideas of environment-friendly initiatives. Skits, drama, dance and slogan competitions will also be organised to promote the measures to save water. The summit will focus on the benefits of conserving and recycling water.

Dr Deepa Bhajekar, an active resident from Hiranandani Meadows, said, "The forum is a big hit among residents. While people from different housing societies share their ideas, the forum acts as a platform to discuss the same and implement it in other societies."

Group members have plans to identify societies which have not implemented rainwater harvesting and encourage them to implement the same on priority basis this monsoon. Ulhas Karle, an active resident and group member, said, " Many prominent societies in the city have installed rain water harvesting with minimum possible budget for the sake of compliance without achieving desired result, hence, it is time to upgrade the rainwater harvesting system, by updating and recharging their stock water and bore-well for future use."

With festival of water and colour, Holi, still a month away, residents are planning a dry holi and other water saving measures from now onwards, so that, they can motivate people, specially, children to go ahead with dry holi celebrations in prominent housing societies in the city.

The group members share, "We also aim at approaching a private agency who would help us with the latest and economical technology to help install rain water harvesting technology and other measures."

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officials, too, would be extending required support to the residents to deal with the water crisis in the city.
