In an incident of political high-handedness, Thane Collector Dr Ashwini Joshi is likely to be transferred amidst speculations after she stayed the development of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) headquarters and neighbouring projects, which was inaugurated by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The 18-acre land was acquired by the state government and caught up in legal technicalities. While guardian minister Eknath Shinde and other political leaders, social activists and welfare communities are patting the back of Dr Ashwini for adopting strict and sensible policies, speculations of her being transferred for being non-corrupt and cracking the whip of illegalities are making rounds.

Fadnavis had performed bhoomipujan of the land last October and the new MBMC headquarters was supposed to be developed by private developers at Rs150 crore.

"An RTI query revealed that the land was acquired by the government due to discrepancies of taxes by the land owner, which was again gained by the owner through alleged means," said Shivajirao Mali, a Mira Road resident and RTI activist.

"The Collector issued stop-work notice as the developer had fraudulently acquired the land and wanted to put pressure on the bureaucrats by getting the project inaugurated by CM. But it seems that due to this, the Collector is facing the wrath, which could lead to her transfer," added Mali.

Dr Joshi is being regarded as one of the daring and honest officers. So, her transfer has led to online campaigns by Thanekars with messages of stopping her transfer before her tenure ends.

Dr Joshi said, "I don't want to comment on the speculations regarding my transfer."
