Every year Ganesh bhakts come up with new ways to host their Ganpati idol in a beautiful makhar. With people becoming environmentally conscious, the task to find eco-friendly decoration becomes very creative as evident in the Tupe household in Uthalsar. The family used over 19kgs of mungfali (groundnut) shells this year to make their makhar.

Though the family has been hosting Bappa for 22 years during Ganeshotsav, they only started using eco-friendly decorations for the last five years. Ram Gajanan Tupe explains, "In the past few years we have become environmentally conscious, and looked for ways and means to decorate our Ganpati Bappa every year."

Initially, the family used cloth and curtains to make the makhar which involved a lot of draping. "But last year I thought of this mungfali idea as it lends texture to the decorations," he said.

However, due to incessant rains last year, Ram was unable to find an adequate amount of mungfalis. "This year it was easy to procure them; I bought and stored them in the house," he said.

Once the idea for the makhar was finalised, the family started working on it from August 15. Every evening, for two to three hours after dinner, the family would sit together and stick the mungfalis to the cardboard. They were also joined by their enthusiastic neighbors in the task. "As the date for Ganesh Chaturthi drew nearer, we sped up our work and got the makhar ready," he said.

The mungfali shells lend a beautiful, textured characted to the makhar. It looks like a solid pillar with intricate carvings. Ram runs a saloon in Thane and says that it is his creative streak that inspires him to come up with such creations.

"I have been interested in handicrafts since childhood, and I lose no opportunity to make something beautiful and creative for my home," he adds.
