As many as 401 cases of drunken driving were recorded by the Thane traffic police on the New Year’s eve, a jump of almost 40% over last year’s 301 cases.

Despite many awareness drives launched by the traffic police, the figures were quite high for Thane this year.

“The number of cases have gone up and to some extent there were not many offenders and maximum offenders were caught were motorcyclists. Most offenders were between 26 and 30 years of age,” deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Shrikant Paropkari said, adding that it was a comparatively peaceful celebration this year.

All the 401 motorists were booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

“The punishment for drink and drive is either a penalty of up to Rs2,000 or six months imprisonment or both,” he said.

Though there has been an increase in the number of offenders this year, the police would continue to increase awareness among people about road safety.
