Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is working towards making Thane, a smart city. As per the central government plan, Thane is also selected for being a solar energy empowered city and as part of that attempt, they have started work on building the nation's first energy efficient school building. Within the next two months, the civic body will be known for building a smart green school.

TMC's school number 44 at Vartak Nagar will be known for its energy efficient and green methods, that are being adopted. 15 kilowatts solar panels are being put up on the terrace of the school building. None of the electrical appliance will be functioning through the electricity board's power. LED lights will be used and ceiling fans across the school will be five star rated.

"Usually lights are 52 watts but within the school LED lights, 16 watts will be used to save energy. Similarly, ceiling fans will consume 35 watts electricity each. All the bathrooms within the school will have occupancy sensor, which will save the energy when the room is not occupied," said an official from the TMC's electrical department.

An estimated cost of Rs45 lakh will be funded for this project by the European Union, so, the TMC need not spend on this project. They have also planned to have a real time web portal, that will update the units generated and the energy consumption, which can be checked by anyone from across the globe.

Depending on the success ratio of this project, the civic body will implement it on other schools too. Apart from saving electricity, they have also planned to install water harvesting, water recycling, segregation of wet and dry waste, conserving and planting trees. After the completion of the project, awareness would be created amongst students about the various programmes and they would be asked to be a part of the smart green school process.
