A citizen's energy management campaign has been started by Thane-based professor, Dr Sanjay Mangala Gopal, who with the help of like-minded people, will be conducting energy audits in housing societies.

He will also be giving tips to residents to reduce their bills and spread awareness on renewable energy.

Dr Gopal is associate professor and head of the non-conventional energy sources laboratory, mechanical engineering Department at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI). His areas of research are renewable energy, rural development, sustainable development of cities through a Bottom-Up approach.

"Energy crisis could be a next big problem for human being hence, it's advisable to wake up now and resort to energy saving methods as soon as possible," he said.

As a part of the campaign, the team will also visit housing societies and audit their electricity bills. The professor added, "Relatively our bills are on the higher side and the reason behind this is our habits. Also, depends on the equipment we use, so we need to alter our usage only then the problem can be solved."

The campaign would be carried for months as the team plans to cover most of the housing societies in Thane. Energy audit is not the only plan. In fact, awareness would be created to use solar energy and residents will be educated to use water judiciously.

After initial phase, homemakers, students and senior residents would be included and made ambassadors of the campaign.

The social initiative has been taken to help people and save the environment as well. Sharing some tips on saving energy Dr Gopal said, "We are working on implementing sustainable energy utility model under which we advise people for energy conservation and using efficient gadgets. In most of the houses, people never switch off plugs after after keeping their phone on charge. Research has proved that our bill amount differentiates, so one must develop the habit of putting off every switch and using gadgets and equipment that consume less energy and are durable. Also, all the housing societies must opt for rainwater harvesting."
