Thane police's chain-snatching (prevention) squad arrests three people with 155 cases between them

The Thane crime branch unit had appointed a chain snatching squad three months ago to investigate chain-snatching cases in Thane commissionerate. With the help of local police, the squad has arrested three people. The accused are history-sheeters and have 155 cases of chain snatching in 21 police station in five zones of Thane registered on them. Major cases are registered in zone 5. All the three accused arrested on November 17 were identified as Iqbal Mohammed Sayyed aka Sheru, 26 - who is the main accused - Devisingh Indrakanth Das Hirasingh Channdana, 20 and Gurupadh Indrakanth Das aka Guru, 25, all are from Kalyan.

They were produced in court and will remian in police custody till December 10. The police have recoverd jewellery worth Rs 84 lakh and a mangalsutra worth Rs33,000 from them The accused were booked under section 392 (punishment for robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.

There were more than 21 officials who were working on the chain-snatching cases and further investigation is on. During investigation, the accused revealed that they know of other friends in Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Badlapur and Dombivali invovled in chain snatching.

Nagesh Lohar, additonal commissioner of police, crime, Thane, said, "We will investigate and then we will see if we can add the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) to the case." Deputy commissioner of police, Parag Manere, said, "Both, the police and the chain snatching squad have done a commendabel job. We have got to know that there are other people also and we are investigating. We have 800 cases till now for this year, of which 250 have been solved and others are under process."

VV Lakshminarayana, joint commissioner of police, Thane, said, "We will see to it that once all the procedures are over, we will hand over the robbed jewellery to the owners. To prevent such cases, we are doing naka bandi at various spots and we are also checking the suspected bikers."
