The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has started a campaign to increase the city's green cover. It aims to plant 5 lakh trees over the next two years, 2.5 lakh each year. The first step will be taken on June 5, which is World Environment Day. As many as 100 indigenous trees will be planted at Owala in Thane West.

"There is a lot of construction work going on in Thane constantly. Though we have very good green cover, we want to ensure that it is maintained and development projects don't have any adverse effects on the environment. This year, TMC will make it its responsibility to plant 1 lakh trees," said Sanjeev Jaiswal, municipal commissioner of Thane.

The remaining trees for the year will be the responsibility of corporate entities, NGOs, individuals and activists. "The point is to mobilise masses and increase public participation to better the city's environmental status.

Nowadays, more and more people are aware about the importance of taking care of the environment, so we are hopeful that citizens will come out and do their bit to maintain the area's greenery," added Jaiswal.

Additional commissioner and chairman of the Tree Authority Sunil Chavan said, "We have chosen indigenous variety of trees that are at least 5-7-foot-tall and three years old. These trees have a higher chance of surviving and do not require much water. We're looking to plant fruit-bearing trees that will attract birds and boost the biodiversity of Thane."

Chavan and other TMC officials have identified spaces where plantation can be carried out. However, there is no compulsion on citizens to plant only specific trees in these specific areas. The TMC will be monitoring and geo-tagging trees planted by private entities to ensure that they are maintained.
