The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has been bestowed with Skoch Order of Merit Award for implementing green manure conversion from floral waste and effective implementation of LED lights in the city.

The Skoch group is an agency that monitors the e-governance and solid waste management and other parameters to judge the civic bodies of its implementation.

The award instituted by Skoch Group is termed as the highest independent honour in India. Though Thanekars are happy, they want the corporation to pay more attention on the neglected parts of the city.

Prachi Shivam, a resident, said, "TMC has till now received many awards for greenery, energy conservation and urban cleanliness, but there is a need of constant monitoring in these field to live up to the awards bestowed to us."

The civic officials are too glad to have been bestowed with the award and will receive it today from minister of state with independent charge for power, coal and new and renewable energy Piyush Goyal.

The city of lakes has also been chosen by the state government to be developed as a smart city in the first phase. The tag of smart city and different awards however, fails to justify evident loopholes.

While city is being awarded for its effective management of LED lights, the incidents of electricity theft and power fluctuations have rocked the city in the past few months.

Activist Chandrahas Tawde said, "In the past, too many awards have been given to TMC, but awards don't justify the work being done by the corporation. The corporation aspires to develop Thane into a smart city, but when it comes to better infrastructure then we are far behind. There are a few areas in city where people have been asking good infrastructure for more than a decade, but it has not happened yet."

"The floral waste of the city is being maintained, but what about solid waste management and umping ground issue which are not yet solved? Not enough awareness has been spread for dry and wet waste segregation in housing societies. Thus, these aspects too need to be streamlined and only then the given award can be justified," said Rjeev Datta, another activist.
