A reason to rejoice for Thanekars, who will soon be able to take a ferry ride to Kalyan, Mira Road and a few more areas by the end of this year. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and various stakeholders in the ambitious inland water transport project have decided to quicken the pace of the project to let a few ferries begin their services by 2018.

The decision was taken in a high-level meeting organised in Thane on Monday between the TMC, municipal commissioners of Vasai-Virar, Mira Bhayander, Bhiwandi, officials of Mumbai Maritime Board, Goa Shipping Yard and others.

The Rs 660 crore worth first phase of this project, which is likely to begin in the next two months, will be funded entirely by the central government. The proposal for the same will be sent to the center for its approvals. "As soon as we get the approval, we will invite tenders for the same so that work can be started at the earliest," said TMC commissioner, Sanjeev Jaiswal.

In 2016, the central government had declared 110 IWT projects in the country out of which Thane is the first to begin this project. Under the first phase IWT will be developed to connect Vasai, Mira-Bhayander, Ghodbunder, Nagla, Kolshet, Kalher, Anjurdive (Bhiwandi),Parsik, Dombivli and Kalyan route. IWT will lessen the commute time by 40%, will be economic and will also reduce environmental pollution.

TMC wants to start operation on some routes by December 2018 and is mulling of possibility to start a shipyard in Palghar. Similarly, Goa Shipyard and Coachin Shipyard will look into the technicalities of commissioning the boats.

The work on the second phase on Thane-Mumbai and Thane-Navi Mumbai route will also be undertaken in co-ordination with MBPT and JNPT officials.
