Apart from exchanging jokes and pleasantries, the social networking app WhatsApp can also be used for meaningful purposes. Acting on a similar thought, Thane resident Anand Mugada has used the app for bringing his school alumni together from across the world and has launched a unique online contest 'International Walkathon'.

"There are 83 members in the group, who are alumni of KE Boards' School in Karnataka and we have aptly named it 'KEB 89'. The group was formed in January 2014 and all are students from 1989 batch, who are now settled across the world," Mugada said.

This closed group launched an interesting contest on August 18 called KEB 89 Walkathon, the world's first ever social media-based international walkathon.

"KEB 89 Walkathon is a pedometer-based contest and to participate, the members were asked to download an app called PACER from Google playstore, which calculates the number of steps a person walks in a day in real time. In the last few days, the group has completed over 15 lakh steps collectively, which translates to a whopping 1,200km. We aim to complete 20 lakh steps by today, which is the last day of the first race," he said. The group members have also submitted their application for 'World's First International WhatsApp Walkathon' to the Guinness Records for this unique initiative and officials are yet to evaluate which might take few more weeks.

Keeping in mind the different time zones, two different sub-groups have been formed to track a participant's scores. Apart from walkathon, the members are actively involved in exchanging variety of information and organise various competitions to keep this group active.

Roopa Prabhu, a leading contestant and a homemaker residing in Thane, said, "I have reinvented my school days passion where I was an active sportsperson. My best so far has been 21km in a day."
